The Claudine series consists of four early novels by the French author Colette, published – Written in diary form, they describe the growth to maturity of a young girl, Claudine. Aged fifteen at the beginning of the first book, Claudine à l'école, the series describes her education and experiences as she grows up.
All the books are written in first-person with the Libretto: L'enfant et les sortilèges. Claudine and Annie is not written in the first person by Claudine but by Annie. At first I found this rather disappointing as Annie is in so many ways the opposite of Claudine, happily the "willing slave" of her husband.
But the book really describes her growth and development, and has a much more satisfactory ending!/5. Although these four volumes supposedly make up the 'Claudine' series, the Claudine and Annie book book 'Claudine and Annie' is quite different.
Whereas 'Claudine in Paris' and 'Claudine Married' keep to the style Claudine and Annie book 'Claudine at School', losing some of the innocence as she grows up but none of the spirit and humour, 'Claudine and Annie' is narrated by Annie /5(27).
