      Shock-induced three-dimensional separation of an axisymmetric hypersonic turbulent boundary layer. Review of skin friction measurements including recent high-Reynolds number results from NASA Langley NTF. A high-speed time resolved DPIV study of the unsteady characteristics of vortex breakdown. An innovative model based on the vortex theory is presented with the aim of simulating the two-dimensional airfoil dynamic behavior at pitching reduced frequencies related to vertical axis wind-turbine operative conditions. The model relies on the introduction of a second separated wake from the suction side to correctly account for the aerodynamic effects of stall conditions and is provided.

      Prevailing utilization of airfoils in the design of micro air vehicles and wind turbines causes to gain attention in terms of determination of flow characterization on these flight vehicles operating at low Reynolds numbers. Thus, these vehicles require flow control techniques to reduce flow phenomena such as boundary layer separation or laminar separation bubble (LSB) affecting aerodynamic. Vortex breakdown, vortex control, and the effect of compressibility on these three- dimensional flows as well as the present and future capabilities of computational techniques are discussed. These fundamental lectures are supplemented by a description of the techniques currently employed by combat aircraft and missile design groups.
